The next article I chose was the negative affects that school uniforms have on kids. Uniforms just give off a better vibe at school and everyone is considered an equal. According to Foster, when kids wear the uniforms they feel a sense of pride and are overall more motivated to go to school to learn and be apart of a community. Talk about school spirit, this is exactly what the uniforms do. Not only does the school uniform provide safety for the students, but it also unifies the school as one. This also acts as a safe zone because faculty can detect if trespassers come into the school. The article suggests that by wearing a school uniform everyone has on the same thing and there is no base for arguments. The article is implying that what a student is wearing may offend some students and this is where conflict begins. The article says most of the time fights start from clothing or possessions that kids have. Studies conducted by Gentile and Imberman from the University of Houston showed that schools that enforce uniforms have better safety and have less violence among students. The article appears intent on convincing us that there are academic benefits of wearing a uniform. One could only imagine that by wearing uniforms set the stage for school unity and for a better learning environment. Foster gives an example, stating that most schools have a variety of students from different economies, a student does not feel left out if they cannot afford to buy the newest styles. The article also says that students do not have to worry about conforming to latest trends. According to the article, “School Uniforms and How They Affect Kids”, by Jinnene Foster, one reason why wearing a school uniform could be beneficial is because the school feels unified as one. The first article I chose seems to state the positive effects of wearing a school uniform. I also chose this topic because I am big believer in self-expression through what you wear so I think that it is important for kids to be able to express themselves however they chose to. This topic relates to me because I had the experience to understand both sides of the issue. After that, I attended a public high school. I can relate to this topic because I went to a Catholic middle school where I was forced to wear a uniform. I think this topic is important to research because this is something that is controversial in the town that I live in. For my Rhetorical Analysis I chose to do the affects of school uniforms.
